Ten Reasons to Learn the Art of Meditation

By Hayley Hunkin

Many people think that meditation is a "new age" phenomenon, but the truth is that human beings have practised the art of meditation for thousands of years in many different cultures and using a variety of techniques. Learning the art of meditation can be easier than you think it might be, especially if you enrol in a meditation course for beginners.  Here are ten great reasons to learn the art of meditation.

1 - Relax
Relaxation is one of the major reasons people want to learn the art of mediation. As our lives become busier and more stressful, many people find it harder to actually relax, as we are so used to being stressed. Learning meditation is a great way to learn how to relax both your mind and your body.

2 - Relieve Stress
The second most common reason people want to learn the art of meditation is to reduce stress. Ongoing stress can make your body physically ill, with symptoms such as headaches, migraines, and other bodily diseases such as stomach ulcers. Stress makes it harder for you to focus on tasks at hand and easier to lose your temper or to say things you don't mean. Practising daily meditation can help you to relieve your stress.

3 - Reduce Anxiety
Anxiety can be extremely debilitating for those who suffer from it. Extreme forms of coping can lead to compulsive behaviours and other socially and personally damaging behaviours. Meditation has successfully helped many people who suffer from mild to severe bouts of anxiety to cope with daily life.

4 - Increase Immunity
This benefit may surprise you, but clinical and scientific tests over recent years have proven a link between meditation and increased immunity to diseases. When you meditate, your body and mind relax, enabling organs to focus on healing. Your overall health will be better if you practise daily meditations and you will be less likely to succumb to common diseases, such as colds and flu, as your body's immune system will be better equipped to deal with the bacterial and virus attacks.

5 - Connect with God
Whether you believe in traditional religious forms of God, such as Jesus Christ, or whether you want to connect with the Universal Spirit in whatever form you believe in, meditation is a terrific tool to help you to connect to God. Meditation is not only a relaxation technique, but it is a spiritual practice and using it can help you to become more aware of the spiritual connections in your life.

6 - Become Self Aware
Meditation is also a practice that enables you to become self aware. You focus on your breathing and your body on a conscious level during a meditation session, but you also allow your mind the freedom to explore areas of unhappiness and depression. This practice of becoming more self aware enables you to make the positive changes in your life that lead to greater contentment, stronger relationships, and overall happiness.

7 - Grow Spiritually
Spiritual growth is a key benefit of learning the art of meditation. When you connect with God and become more self aware, you become aware of your own spiritual needs. Human beings are unique animals in that our souls or spirits need as much nourishment as our physical bodies. Meditation is like enjoying a nourishing meal for your spirit.

8 - Increase Pleasure
Researchers have shown that people who meditate can experience up to 50 per cent more electrical impulses and activity in left frontal lobe of the brain. This is the area most associated with sensations of pleasure and anxiety reduction. Meditation can give you a sensation of extreme joy and intense pleasure that lasts throughout the day.

9 - Enjoy Life
When you practise daily meditations, you find your capacity for enjoying life becomes strengthened. You will find joy in little events in every day life, like a ray of sunshine bursting through a grey cloud. Meditation takes away stresses and allows you to enjoy your life every day.

10 - Find Peace
Peace is the ultimate goal of many of the world's religions, but few people really attain it in this life. Meditation brings you peace within yourself and will enable you to strengthen your relationships to enjoy peace in your life. Peace is a state where contentment reigns instead of the stress that wars within the breasts of the majority of the population. Peace is connecting with God and knowing the joy of acceptance of who you are.
